“Navigating Your Food Relationship: Understanding the Why Behind Overeating”

Have you ever caught yourself overeating or giving in to less-than-ideal food choices, all while wondering why it’s happening? It’s time to clarify something—it’s not your fault.

The journey to understanding our relationship with food is multifaceted. From the desire to regulate an imbalanced system to finding comfort in times of stress, there’s a spectrum of factors influencing our choices.

For instance, processed foods loaded with sugar, fat, salt, and additives trigger the brain’s reward system, creating a cycle of craving and addiction.

Surprisingly, overeating triggers a dopamine response similar to that of using illicit substances like cocaine or alcohol in the brain’s pleasure and reward center.

Moreover, certain foods may lead to a histamine response in sensitive bodies, creating a draining impact which we in turn use foods to pull us out of.

Histamine, acting as a neurotransmitter in the brain, can influence mood-altering neurotransmitters like GABA, dopamine, and serotonin, potentially intensifying feelings of anxiety and depression.

Our body and brain often seek the path of least resistance, where we feel “safe.” When we want to engage in a new behavior, such as embracing healthier eating patterns, our system often experiences a sense of danger.

Yet it can eventually construct neural pathways to send signals related to the new behavior. With repetition, this pathway becomes more familiar, offering a sense of security.

The journey might feel puzzling, but there’s a path forward. We’re all on a quest for balance. If you’ve experienced the allure of specific foods and the challenges that come with it, know that you’re not alone.
